_Romex Stayman_

In Romex a 2NT opening or rebid may contain a five card major.  
Then, responder may want to find the five card major.  Responder
bids the cheapest club bid and asks.  Responder's hand could 

1) Be looking to play in 3NT  [in Romex 2NT-3NT is a transfer to
   diamonds-- in other systems you could "throw out" this requisite]

2) Be looking for a 4-4 major fit

3) Have five spades and four hearts  [with five hearts and four 
   spades merely transfer to hearts and then bid spades-- if the
   hand is strong enough]

4) Have slam interest with 4441, 5440 or 5422  [this is discussed
   in the _Advanced Section_ below]


The rebids by opener to 3C after 2NT is below: 
 
        2NT-3C  
        3NT  four-four in the majors  (responder passes or
               bids one _under_ the intended major of play) 
        3S   five card spade suit  (responder passes, or bids 
               3NT or 4S) 
        3H   four or five card heart suit  (responder passes,
               bids 3NT or 4H, or bids 3S to ask:
               3NT  rebid shows four hearts
               4C   2533 }  these show five plus where 
               4D   3523 }  the doubleton is [in 
               4H   3532 }  ascending order]
        3D   none of the above-- could have four spades
               (responder then rebids 
               3NT  to play
               3H   shows four spades [opener bids 3S or 3NT]
               3S   shows five spades (and four hearts)
